WHAT
ARE DOMAIN NAMES AND HOSTING?
Before
a website can be seen, it needs a place to live. An ISP (Internet
Service Provider) is a business that typically provides two services:
they provide connection to the internet (your computer calls them
to get on line, if you use a modem) and they provide storage space
- hosting - for web pages on computers at their site. Other
companies are in business to provide only hosting services and do
not offer connection service. The pages we create for you have to
be stored with a host so people on the Internet can see you. You
have a choice where to store your web pages and we can help you
make that decision.
A
domain name is the familiar "yourcompany.com" you see
in every web address. Your domain name is registered with
a master registry as belonging only to you for a certain period
of time. Similar to a telephone number, your registered domain
name is exclusive. If you don't have a domain name, we can
assist you with researching some choices and having one registered.
